So, what is actually going on?
The 2019 Environment Aotearoa Report shows that our unique native biodiversity is under significant pressure.
This pressure comes from introduced species, pollution, physical changes to our landscapes and coast, harvesting of wild species, and other factors.
These pressures have caused a rapid decline of our indigenous ecosystems and species, and this decline continues today.
Over 4,000 species are at risk of extinction, including more than 80% of reptiles, bats, seabirds; more than 70% of land birds and freshwater fish; and almost half of our plants.
Our current New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy is nearly 20 years old and expires in 2020.
Much has changed in this time, and now we need a strategy that addresses current issues and incorporates new approaches to managing biodiversity.
